Two pounds of air are escaping the Zvezda service module every day, forcing NASA to command four astronauts to suit up and prepare for an emergency evacuation. The order arrived at 9:04 a.m. ET, marking a significant escalation in a long-standing technical struggle within the aging Russian section of the station.

The crew of the Crew-12 mission—comprising two U.S. astronauts, one French astronaut, and one Russian cosmonaut—received instructions to enter their spacecraft as a precautionary measure against the worsening pressure loss. While the Zvezda module has suffered from minor leaks for an extended period, the rate of depletion doubled on Monday, shifting from one pound to two pounds per diem according to senior NASA officials.

NASA and Roscosmos remain locked in ongoing discussions regarding the structural integrity of the module.
