Two cargo ships bound for a Russian port came under fire Friday in the Sea of Azov, leaving Azerbaijani crew members dead. The strike, which Moscow attributes to Ukrainian forces, marks a volatile escalation in regional maritime hostilities and has prompted an immediate diplomatic response from Baku.
Ukrainian drone units, directed by commander Robert Brovdi, targeted the vessels alleging they were involved in the illicit transport of stolen Ukrainian grain and military supplies. This justification has been met with sharp condemnation from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which characterized the strike as a hallmark of the Kyiv regime’s tactics. The human toll has forced Azerbaijan into the center of the conflict. While Baku confirmed the fatalities among its citizens, the government is now coordinating closely with Moscow to address the incident. This cooperation highlights the fragile position of neutral parties navigating the increasingly dangerous shipping lanes of the Sea of Azov.
