Zelenskiy Proposes Direct Talks to End Conflict with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has bypassed traditional diplomatic channels to issue an open letter to Vladimir Putin, formally proposing a face-to-face summit to negotiate an end to the war. The move signals a desperate pivot toward direct engagement, while simultaneously warning that Ukraine remains prepared for a protracted military defense.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the correspondence reached the Russian leader overnight. According to Peskov, Putin has already reviewed the document, though the Kremlin remains characteristically opaque regarding a potential response. Observers anticipate that Putin may address the proposal during his upcoming appearance at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Zelenskiy’s letter goes beyond mere procedural requests, incorporating a sharp critique of the domestic situation within Russia. The Ukrainian leader suggested that the Russian public is increasingly exhausted by the mounting costs of the conflict and the current trajectory of Putin’s administration. This public challenge places the onus of escalation or de-escalation squarely on the Kremlin, forcing a response to a proposal that effectively frames the war as a choice rather than a necessity.
