Greece has completed the licensing needed for survey and cable-laying work on the Great Sea Interconnector, a €1.9 billion project intended to link the electricity grids of Greece and Cyprus, with a planned extension to Israel, according to the Greek foreign ministry.

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis signed the approval after an inter-ministerial committee recommended it. Greek authorities issued the permits following an application by French cable maker Nexans on behalf of the project company, GSI. A research vessel assigned to the project has also received a NAVTEX notice to mariners for the planned operations.

Developed by Greece’s power grid operator IPTO AD, the interconnector has faced delays amid a dispute with Turkey over maritime zones. The project is intended to connect the power grids of Greece and Cyprus and eventually Israel.
