The arrest followed reports by British tabloid The Sun that Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., found a collection of child sexual abuse images while clearing out their father’s former home in Cebu City, Philippines. The AP’s sources were not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Meghan recently said she was “deeply distressed” by allegations that images had been found at the property. She also disclosed that a letter containing “troubling allegations” about her father was sent to London police in 2018. “It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated,” she said. Meghan added that her decision to keep her father from contact with her children was “for one reason: to protect them.”
The Sun reported that Markle Jr. found “hundreds, if not thousands” of images in boxes while clearing the property. He told the newspaper he reported them to police in the Philippines and contacted the FBI. “I have supported, cared for him and helped him for years - but that stops now,” he said, adding that he would not speak to his father again unless called to give evidence against him.
Thomas Markle Sr., a retired television lighting and photography director, had been living in the Philippines earlier this year when he suffered a stroke and had his left leg amputated, forcing him to return to the United States. He did not attend Meghan’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle. The couple have two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan, an American citizen, starred in the television drama “Suits.”
