Turkey Proposes Pipeline to Supply Gas Across Cyprus

A proposed 101-km subsea pipeline from Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus could supply gas for the island and, if an agreement is reached, support electricity sales to the Greek Cypriot government, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.

Bayraktar said gas delivered to the TRNC could fuel a gas-fired power plant there. The project may also connect to Europe in the future. He said any gas found in the eastern Mediterranean could be transported to Turkey and European markets, and indicated Turkey was willing to cooperate with Greece on energy matters.

Energy cooperation and maritime boundaries remain sources of dispute in the eastern Mediterranean, including over hydrocarbon exploration. Turkey is the only country that recognizes the TRNC and does not recognize the Greek Cypriot government. Cyprus has been divided since Turkey’s 1974 invasion.
