Puri thanked his colleagues in a Facebook post on Thursday and said he was “Excited to get to work.” He said he hoped to deliver on promises made during the election campaign alongside Camilleri and Benson, both identified as elected officials in the source.
Born to Punjabi immigrants, Puri became the first Sikh American elected to the Michigan House in 2020. He is serving his third term. In 2025, he was appointed leader of the Democratic Party in the Republican-controlled, 110-member House of Representatives.
Puri said his parents could not have imagined that their son would one day “make history, break barriers and lead the Michigan House,” calling that “the promise of America.” Before returning to Michigan, he worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012, earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and worked in the automotive industry.
Chintan Patel, executive director of Indian American Impact, congratulated Puri on his reelection and election as speaker-elect. Patel said lowering costs, including for health care and housing, had been central to Puri’s work. He also said Puri would defend South Asian communities amid rising hate and oppose the Trump and “MAGA” agenda. Indian American Impact supported Puri early, Patel said, and looked forward to working with him for Michigan families.
