Westchester County Ballot Scanners Fail, Delaying Vote Count

Thousands of paper ballots in Westchester County were diverted to a secure warehouse Tuesday after a software update rendered scanning machines inoperable. The technical malfunction forced officials to pause the tally in New York’s 17th Congressional District, pushing the final count into Wednesday morning under police-escorted supervision.

The failure originated from a last-minute software patch intended for a single municipal race, which effectively desynchronized the machines from the county’s ballot format. While voters continued to cast their ballots, they were required to place them in secure bags for later processing. Election officials confirmed that counting would resume at 11 a.m. Wednesday with bipartisan oversight.

The district, a key battleground between Republican Representative Mike Lawler and Democrat Cait Conley, saw immediate tension as voters reported long lines and confusion. Lawler, who conceded the race late Tuesday despite the incomplete tally, acknowledged the widespread frustration but dismissed allegations of electoral fraud. Residents like White Plains real estate broker Toni Chrystal expressed disbelief, questioning how a county with significant resources failed to identify the programming error during pre-election testing.
