Iran’s Ghalibaf Interprets US Midterm Results as Anti-War Mandate

Following a decisive shift in control of the US Congress, Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that American voters have rejected the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He warned that if the White House ignores this public sentiment, Tehran remains prepared to escalate its military response.

The Democratic Party’s capture of both the Senate and House of Representatives served as a significant rebuke to President Donald Trump’s administration midway through his term. Ghalibaf, framing the electoral outcome as a referendum on the war, stated on social media that Tehran endorses the American public’s apparent desire for peace. While acknowledging the political impact of the conflict, Trump admitted the war and the subsequent surge in global oil prices contributed to his party’s losses.

Despite the electoral pressure, the administration continues to engage in localized strikes. Trump recently confirmed targeting an anti-aircraft facility on Qeshm Island, describing the operation as a minor tactical success. Even as he maintains that the military is locked and loaded for potential future action, he signaled a preference for avoiding further escalation. Ghalibaf, however, maintains that Iran’s defensive posture remains unchanged, asserting that the initiative to prevent further catastrophe now rests solely with the United States.
