Republican Senate losses signal nationwide shift against Trump

The Democratic Party has secured control of both the US House and Senate, delivering a stinging rebuke to President Donald Trump. Across the country, voters dismantled long-standing Republican strongholds in Texas, South Carolina, and Kansas, effectively turning the midterm elections into a referendum on the administration's economic and foreign policies.

In Texas, schoolteacher James Talarico ended a 32-year Republican drought by defeating Attorney General Ken Paxton. This victory marked the first time a Democrat captured statewide office in Texas since 1994, despite aggressive campaigning from the White House. The loss serves as a direct blow to Trump, who had personally prioritized the state and endorsed Paxton despite his history of scandal.

South Carolina saw paediatrician Annie Andrews flip a Senate seat held by Republicans for 28 years, a feat not accomplished by her party since 1998. Meanwhile, in Kansas, Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton broke a 94-year losing streak, unseating Senator Roger Marshall. These results, compounded by losses in North Carolina and Ohio, underscore a broad erosion of support for the President. With his party losing its legislative majority, Trump has signaled an intent to utilize his veto power to obstruct incoming Democratic bills, already posting a symbolic image of his signature red hat captioned with the word "VETO."
