Binance Scrambles to Contain $6.3 Billion Crypto Breach

A massive security breach has compromised $6.3 billion in assets linked to Binance, triggering an industry-wide freeze. While the exchange halted withdrawals to conduct a forensic sweep, major stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle moved to lock down $2.3 billion in funds to prevent the digital assets from being laundered or moved.

The incident originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a software developer, according to the exchange. Binance co-founder Yi He confirmed that the platform is working alongside law enforcement to secure its infrastructure, with operations expected to resume by Sunday. The company has pledged to cover all losses from its Secure Asset Fund for Users, a reserve established in 2018 to mitigate extraordinary risks.

Stablecoin providers played a critical role in the containment effort. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed the freezing of $1.5 billion in USDT, while Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire reported a block on $800 million in USDC associated with the attack. Despite the scale of the theft, Binance maintains that no private keys were compromised during the intrusion.

Markets reacted sharply to the news, with Bitcoin dipping below $77,000 before stabilizing near $78,400. Binance, which operates globally under the regulatory oversight of the Abu Dhabi Global Market, continues to emphasize that customer accounts remain isolated from the breach. The firm has yet to provide further specifics on the developer's identity or the exact timeline of the unauthorized access.
