Flavio Bolsonaro Ally Blames ChatGPT for 'President-Elect' Slip

A digital slip-up in a letter posted by Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro sparked immediate controversy when the lawmaker briefly declared himself the country’s rightful president-elect. His allies now claim the error was an unintended output from ChatGPT, rather than a calculated political challenge to the recent election results.

The document, shared on social media Wednesday, triggered a swift reaction from Brazil’s political establishment. Roughly an hour after publication, the post was deleted and replaced with a version labeling the senator simply as a leader of Brazil. Paulo Figueiredo, a right-wing influencer and unofficial spokesperson for the Bolsonaro family, claimed the mistake occurred during the drafting process. According to Figueiredo, former Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro utilized the AI tool to refine the text, which inadvertently pulled from an outdated draft containing the contested title.

Despite the technical explanation, the incident highlights the senator's ongoing refusal to accept the victory of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula defeated the Bolsonaro camp by more than 4 million votes, a result upheld by the federal electoral court and international observers. The senator remains in Miami following his departure from Brazil, where he currently faces a Supreme Court probe into alleged money laundering. Figueiredo maintained that the AI mishap was an oversight, emphasizing that the core message regarding the alleged illegitimacy of the election remains unchanged.
