Pentagon removes top military planner as Iran strike options loom

Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s director for strategy, plans and policy, has been abruptly dismissed. The move comes as President Donald Trump weighs renewed military action against Iran, leaving a critical vacancy within the Joint Chiefs of Staff during a period of heightened regional volatility.

Sylvia’s removal marks the second time the position, known as the J5, has been vacated under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His predecessor, Lieutenant General Joseph McGee, was forced into retirement last October. No official reason for the firing was provided, and no successor has been named to oversee the coordination of military plans between the Joint Chiefs and the White House.

The timing of the dismissal coincides with reports that the administration is preparing for potential strikes on Iran following the upcoming midterm elections. While officials maintain that a final decision has not been reached, the arrival of a third US aircraft carrier and thousands of additional troops in the Middle East suggests active preparations for escalation. Regional allies have been briefed on the possibility of renewed hostilities and potential retaliatory measures from Tehran.

This departure is part of a broader trend, with nearly two dozen senior military leaders fired or forced into retirement during Hegseth’s tenure. The Defense Secretary has publicly targeted a 20 percent reduction in general and flag officer positions by 2027, framing the initiative as a long-overdue accountability measure. Critics in Congress, including Senator Mark Kelly, have characterized the systemic removal of top brass as a purge that threatens to undermine institutional expertise for years to come.
