Romanian President Nicusor Dan directly attributed the strike to Russian military aggression, citing a broader pattern of hostility aimed at NATO’s eastern flank. The vessel, crewed by 13 Ukrainian and Azeri sailors, issued a distress signal 13 nautical miles offshore before capsizing in rough seas. Emergency responders continue to search for the remaining crew members, though hopes for survivors are fading as the vessel remains largely submerged.
This incident is part of a wider surge in maritime aggression. Over the past two weeks, seven commercial ships have sustained damage in the vicinity of Romania and Bulgaria, impacting roughly 30 crew members. In response to the growing threat, NATO officials confirmed plans to deploy additional aircraft and surveillance drones to the region, while neighboring states are demanding more robust protection for civilian maritime traffic.
