Amazon Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Rape and Workplace Retaliation

A marketing manager at Amazon Web Services has filed a lawsuit alleging that a senior executive raped her during a 2023 business trip to New York. The complaint further accuses the e-commerce giant of violating Washington’s Silenced No More Act by pressuring the employee to remain quiet about the assault.

Amazon Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Rape and Workplace Retaliation

Laura Danbom, based in Seattle, states the incident involving executive Michelangelo Simonte occurred on October 27, 2023, following an Amazon-sponsored event. According to the court filing, the company forced Danbom into an untenable position, demanding she keep silent about the assault while maintaining professional contact with the man she accused. Her attorney, Jay Free, argued that such directives effectively threaten termination for any employee who dares to speak out about workplace violence.

The lawsuit details significant lapses in how the company handled the report. Danbom claims she provided police with DNA evidence shortly after the encounter, yet investigators never secured a sample from Simonte for comparison. Beyond the alleged failure to conduct a proper internal investigation, the suit contends that Amazon created a hostile environment by ignoring safety concerns. These claims, filed in a Seattle state court, have yet to be tested or proven in a judicial setting.
