University of Arizona Suspends Sigma Phi Epsilon After Sexual Assault Claim

A female student reported waking to two men assaulting her at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on August 26, prompting the University of Arizona to impose an immediate activities suspension. The move follows allegations of sexual misconduct and the illegal provision of alcohol to minors at the chapter.

Associate Dean of Students Whitney Mohr notified the organization on Wednesday that it poses a substantial risk to the campus community. The suspension prohibits the chapter from hosting or sponsoring any events until the investigation concludes. Search warrant records indicate the student reported consensual kissing before being assaulted, noting physical signs of strangulation the following morning. She subsequently underwent a forensic examination at a local hospital.

Sigma Phi Epsilon’s national leadership stated it has suspended the individuals involved and pledged full cooperation with authorities. Meanwhile, the university is intensifying oversight of Greek life; earlier this month, administrators suspended 21 fraternities due to recurring reports of hazing, drug use, and alcohol-related violations. The Tucson-based chapter was already serving probation for hazing incidents reported in July. University police continue their investigation, though the Pima County Attorney's Office has not yet received the case for formal prosecution.
