Indian consumer staples face margin squeeze despite double-digit growth

India’s leading consumer goods firms are bracing for a margin contraction in the second quarter, even as aggregate revenue growth climbs toward 13 percent. While volume recovery signals resilient demand, rising costs for crude-linked inputs and logistics continue to weigh heavily on corporate profitability, according to a Systematix Research report.

Indian consumer staples face margin squeeze despite double-digit growth

Volume growth has accelerated to 7–9 percent over the past four quarters, a marked improvement from the sluggish 2–5 percent range seen previously. This momentum is bolstered by strategic pricing hikes of 5–6 percent across essentials like detergents, edible oils, and dairy. Companies have also leveraged recent GST rate cuts to increase product grammages, effectively stimulating consumer demand in categories ranging from snacks to coffee.

Despite this topline health, profitability remains fragile. Systematix forecasts a 105-basis-point drop in aggregate gross margins year-on-year for the second quarter, exacerbated by elevated freight expenses and the cost of packaging materials. To maintain market share in a competitive landscape, firms are aggressively reinvesting margins into brand building and distribution networks. While the upcoming festive season offers a potential volume tailwind, sustained margin recovery in the second half of the fiscal year hinges on whether input cost inflation stabilizes or necessitates further retail price adjustments.
