Romania Stalls as Third Prime Minister Nominee Fails Vote

Siegfried Muresan’s bid to lead Romania collapsed on Wednesday after the European lawmaker secured only 182 votes, falling well short of the 233-seat threshold. The rejection marks the third failed attempt by President Nicusor Dan to appoint a cabinet since the previous coalition government disintegrated five months ago.

The political vacuum threatens to derail critical fiscal reforms, specifically the 2027 budget targets required to safeguard the nation’s investment-grade credit rating. With the legislative process paralyzed, the hard-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR) and the Social Democrats (PSD) are now positioned to potentially forge a new, albeit unpredictable, majority. While the Social Democrats previously triggered the collapse of the prior government in May, their current willingness to engage with the polling-leading AUR creates a volatile path forward.

Romanian law permits the president to dissolve parliament and trigger snap elections should two consecutive prime ministerial nominations fail, though President Dan remains hesitant to pursue this route. Markets have shown resilience, with the leu holding steady against the euro, yet the currency has already shed 3.5% of its value this year. Ratings agencies remain focused on the legislative deadlock, warning that failure to curb the budget deficit remains the primary risk to the country’s financial stability.
