Tourists Stranded by Rising Tides While Chasing Photos on Oregon Coast

The visitors had descended into the secluded Tillamook County cove to capture dramatic imagery of the cliffs and caves, oblivious to the rapidly changing water levels. As the tide surged, it blocked the only exit route, forcing the group onto a shrinking strip of sand. With no cellular service available, the travelers activated an emergency satellite alert at 3:45 pm, prompting a swift deployment by the Netarts-Oceanside Fire District.

Rescuers utilized drone surveillance to locate the group, who had spelled "SOS" using driftwood on the sand. Firefighters navigated the surging water to reach the stranded individuals, who were found cold and shivering. Using safety ropes and life vests, the team guided the trio back to higher ground. Tillamook Fire Chief Jeff McBrayer noted that the incident highlights the critical need for visitors to consult tide charts or local guidance before exploring the area, warning that emergency access to the cove is frequently restricted by dangerous conditions.
