The dispute centers on an interim order from the poll panel that bars both rival factions from utilizing the "All India Trinamool Congress" name and the traditional "Flowers and Grass" symbol. In response, Mamata Banerjee has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the order, labeling the Commission's directive as arbitrary. She is seeking an immediate stay, arguing that the restriction severely hampers her faction's campaign efforts for the scheduled October 6 bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar.

Pending a final resolution on the internal leadership struggle, the Commission has mandated a temporary brand split. The Banerjee-led faction must now campaign under the name "Mamata All India Trinamool Congress" with a "Football Player" symbol. Meanwhile, the rival group led by Arup Roy has been assigned "Democratic Trinamool Congress" and the "Envelope" symbol. These arrangements will remain strictly in effect for the duration of the October by-elections, with vote counting set to follow on October 9.
