Lucknow Poster Campaign Links SP Leadership to Former Criminal Figures

The public display underscores the intensifying political friction in Uttar Pradesh as parties pivot toward the 2027 Assembly elections. With law and order serving as a primary battleground, the opposition and ruling factions are increasingly weaponizing allegations of criminal-political entanglements to undermine their rivals. The figures featured in the poster represent a contentious chapter in the state’s political history. Atiq Ahmed, a former SP MP, was murdered in police custody in April 2023, while Mukhtar Ansari died in custody in March 2024 following multiple criminal convictions. Azam Khan, a former state minister, continues to navigate various legal battles, consistently framing the charges against him as politically orchestrated.

This confrontation follows a weekend of heightened tensions in Rae Bareli, where a clash erupted between the SP student wing and the RSS-affiliated ABVP. Addressing the incident, Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP government of systemic humiliation toward the PDA—the Pichada, Dalit, and Alpsankyak communities. He warned that the perceived marginalization of these groups is fueling a growing grassroots agitation that threatens to destabilize the current administration’s grip on the state.
