Ulcinj Completes 14.5km Sewer Network to Bolster Coastal Sanitation

The newly completed networks span the Kodre, Bijela Gora, Totosi, and Donja Bratica districts. With construction work led by the Italian firm SPIGA Srl and engineering oversight provided by C.&S. Di Giuseppe Ingegneri Associati Srl, the project represents a significant shift toward modernizing municipal utilities. Project Consulting Podgorica, or PROCON, managed the implementation, ensuring the infrastructure aligns with national environmental standards.

For Ulcinj Mayor Genci Nimanbegu, the focus has shifted from construction to activation. The municipality is now prioritizing the connection of households to the system to ensure the investment translates into immediate service improvements. Davor Kunc, head of the EIB representation in Montenegro, noted that such resilient systems are vital for managing the pressures of a growing population and increasing tourism.

This initiative is part of a broader €116 million commitment from the EIB toward Montenegrin water infrastructure since 2006, combining loans with European Union grants. Zoran Dabetić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Ecology, emphasized that these local upgrades are essential for meeting European Union standards. By integrating regional environmental protection with technical assistance, the project serves as a model for the development goals currently pursued by other Montenegrin municipalities.
