The formations were captured on August 19, 2026, using the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and Mastcam instruments. Unlike standard impact sites, these pits measure approximately one centimeter in diameter and lack the debris or associated objects typically found at the center of cratered surfaces. Dr. Michelle Minitti, MAHLI Deputy Principal Investigator, noted that while surface pits are a recurring observation, the geometry of these specific features marks a departure from previously studied terrain.
To analyze the findings, scientists processed overlapping images into three-dimensional models, revealing structural variations within the surrounding bedrock. Beyond the pits, the rover examined grey, resistant layers that suggest distinct chemical compositions compared to the host rock. These textures indicate fluctuating depositional conditions in the Gale Crater region, providing researchers with new variables to reconstruct the environmental evolution of Mount Sharp.
