Construction recently hit a key milestone with the installation of the 23rd and final foundation element in the North Sea. The new capital will finance critical electrical infrastructure, including a 220 kV high-voltage substation and six alternating current cables designed to funnel renewable energy to the mainland. This latest injection brings the bank's total commitment to the project to €1.65 billion, following an initial €650 million loan issued earlier in 2024.
Beyond domestic supply, the island acts as a strategic gateway. It is engineered to host future interconnectors with the United Kingdom, facilitating a more flexible flow of electricity across European borders. By anchoring the second offshore wind zone, the hub aims to stabilize market prices and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Elia Transmission Belgium CEO Frédéric Dunon highlighted that the project serves as a cornerstone for long-term energy sovereignty, turning Belgian engineering expertise into a scalable model for regional grid integration. As the facility moves toward its 2031 grid-connection target, it remains a primary demonstration of the EIB’s TechEU initiative, aimed at proving the viability of large-scale, innovative offshore infrastructure.
