Raj Kumar Verka, the Congress working president, characterized the suicide as a direct result of government suppression. According to party officials, Singh, a resident of Toor Banzara village, faced severe intimidation following his public attempt to challenge the state's response to the drug crisis during a rally held by the Chief Minister.
Beyond the allegations of state-sponsored harassment, the BJP has weighed in on the tragedy. District President Daaman Bajwa claimed that Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema dismissed Singh’s grievances during a recent village visit, leaving the worker humiliated and isolated. This sequence of events has drawn sharp criticism regarding the administration's disregard for public health concerns and the protection of citizens who speak out against local illicit drug networks.
