European Markets Slip as Novartis Stumbles and Oil Prices Climb

Brent crude futures hit $98.5 per barrel on Tuesday, fueling fresh inflation jitters across European exchanges as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalate. Markets struggled to find footing after Iran signaled potential strikes on regional energy infrastructure, compounding the impact of a sharp sell-off in the pharmaceutical sector.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index retreated 0.2% to 648.41 points during early trading. National benchmarks mirrored this downward trend, with Germany's DAX shedding 0.3% and France's CAC 40 slipping 0.4%, while London's FTSE 100 held steady. Investor sentiment soured further following a disappointing clinical update from Novartis, which sent the Swiss giant’s shares tumbling 8.8%.

The decline followed the failure of a late-stage trial for the myotonic dystrophy drug del-desiran, marking the company’s second consecutive R&D setback in as many days. Despite the broader market gloom, some pockets of activity emerged: Sandoz shares rose 2.9% after the company outlined aggressive sales growth targets. Meanwhile, Poste Italiane moved to expand its influence by sweetening its takeover bid for Telecom Italia, though the maneuver did little to bolster its own stock, which drifted 0.2% lower.
