The findings, published in Nature Astronomy, complicate the narrative surrounding Europa as a prime candidate for extraterrestrial life. While the moon is known to harbor a subsurface ocean containing twice the volume of Earth’s seas, the new measurements indicate that the surface experiences minimal erosion—roughly 1.5 centimeters per million years. This low rate of oxygen production suggests that the potential transfer of life-sustaining oxygen from the surface into the interior ocean may be far more restricted than once hypothesized.
Juno’s instruments captured these readings during a flyby on September 29, 2022, identifying molecular oxygen and hydrogen ions generated by the moon's interaction with Jupiter’s plasma environment. These charged particles, known as pickup ions, reveal a cycle where oxygen is lost to space or reabsorbed by the icy crust. Whether this specific oxygen output represents a baseline or a temporary fluctuation remains an open question for planetary scientists. Upcoming missions, including the Europa Clipper and the Juice probe, are expected to provide the necessary context to determine if this oxygen deficit limits the moon’s actual habitability or if other chemical processes compensate for the shortfall.
