Vietnam Secures $42.76 Million to Climate-Proof Irrigation Systems

The Asian Development Bank and the Vietnamese government have finalized a $42.76 million agreement to overhaul irrigation infrastructure across three provinces. This initiative targets the growing instability of water supplies, aiming to secure the livelihoods of nearly 300,000 people facing increasingly unpredictable rainfall and severe drought conditions.

The Climate Adaptation Through Irrigation Modernization Project will upgrade seven distinct systems in Dong Nai, Gia Lai, and Quang Ngai. By modernizing these networks, the project will provide reliable water access to 21,941 hectares of land, empowering farmers to transition toward high-value crops and diversify their production. ADB Country Director for Viet Nam Shantanu Chakraborty noted that such infrastructure is essential for food security, allowing producers to make informed planting decisions despite climate-driven volatility.

Beyond physical construction, the project introduces digital tools to monitor real-time water demand and weather patterns, replacing rigid, outdated scheduling. A significant portion of the mandate focuses on social equity, with a requirement that women comprise at least 40% of participants in technical training programs. These sessions cover climate-smart agricultural practices and efficient system management to ensure that households often excluded from decision-making gain direct access to resources. The financing combines $40.66 million from ADB’s ordinary capital resources with $2.1 million in grants from the Government of Japan, specifically via the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific and the High-Level Technology Fund.
