Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever Visits New Delhi to Bolster Ties

Marking the first visit by a Belgian leader to India in two decades, Prime Minister Bart De Wever arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to cement a strategic partnership. The three-day mission aims to bridge India’s massive industrial scale with Belgium’s specialized expertise in technology, pharmaceuticals, and global logistics.

Standing alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, De Wever acknowledged the two-decade diplomatic gap, describing India’s rapid transformation into a global economic and technological powerhouse. The Belgian leader emphasized that while his nation is smaller in scale, its status as a highly connected, open economy offers a natural synergy for India’s growth. He identified semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing as primary sectors for deepening collaboration between the two nations.

The visit holds significant strategic weight, underscored by the presence of Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken. Beyond trade, the agenda covers broader security concerns in an increasingly fragmented global landscape. Following his initial meetings, De Wever is scheduled to address a Confederation of Indian Industry summit to advocate for the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement. The delegation will then shift focus to Mumbai on Friday, where the Prime Minister plans to engage with stakeholders in the maritime, logistics, and diamond sectors to further integrate the two economies.
