Trump Links Future Putin Summit to Ukraine Peace Deal

Donald Trump confirmed his willingness to host another summit with Vladimir Putin, setting a clear condition: the meeting must coincide with a definitive breakthrough in the Ukraine conflict. While the former president maintains that a dialogue is possible, he insists on timing it to secure a lasting peace agreement.

Addressing reporters at the Oval Office, Trump emphasized his desire to foster productive relationships with both Russia and Ukraine, framing stability as a prerequisite for global business interests. He noted that while a meeting could theoretically be arranged immediately, he prefers to wait until the war nears its conclusion. Trump maintains that his personal rapport and diplomatic strategy could have prevented the invasion entirely, claiming there was zero chance of the conflict during his 2016–2020 term.

This approach signals a shift from the August 2025 summit in Alaska, which served as the first direct high-level engagement since the 2022 invasion but concluded without a formal ceasefire or signed agreement. Although both leaders previously reported progress on security concerns, Trump now seeks to avoid symbolic meetings in favor of tangible outcomes. He acknowledged the deep-seated animosity between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, yet expressed optimism that the current geopolitical climate is moving toward a moment ripe for negotiation.
