Japan-Funded Scholars Converge in Jakarta to Expand Global Networks

Since 1988, Japan has invested $220 million into the Asian Development Bank’s scholarship initiative, funding the education of over 4,400 scholars from 37 countries. This financial commitment aims to cultivate expertise that graduates carry back to their home nations, eventually strengthening public institutions and research sectors. Kanya Sasradipoera, Deputy Director of the ADB Indonesia Resident Mission, emphasized that the value of these programs extends well beyond the degree itself, manifesting in the long-term professional impact of its participants.

For the attendees, the reunion served as a platform for cross-sector collaboration and mentorship. Mitsuru Myochin, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, identified mutual trust and personal connections as the core of these enduring partnerships. By facilitating exchanges between graduates from diverse Japanese-supported tracks—including those administered by the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency—the event highlighted how academic investment transforms into sustained public service and international cooperation.
