Access to affordable credit currently acts as a significant hurdle for women in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Limited liquidity often prevents small enterprises from purchasing essential equipment or scaling production, stalling growth even when market demand exists. This partnership addresses these constraints by offering microloans with extended repayment terms, enabling entrepreneurs to move beyond immediate survival and toward sustainable business planning.
EIB Vice-President Ioannis Tsakiris noted the project serves as a key pillar of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, designed to foster inclusive private sector growth. By leveraging Banco do Brasil’s extensive local network, the funds will reach remote areas where formal banking remains sparse. Jose Ricardo Sasseron, Vice-President for Government and Corporate Sustainability at Banco do Brasil, emphasized that the collaboration aligns with the EU-Brazil Green Deal, directing capital toward innovation and climate-conscious business practices.
Beyond simple lending, the program intends to bolster regional resilience. For the individual entrepreneur, the impact translates into practical improvements: better inventory, modernized production tools, and improved cash flow. By focusing on women-led microenterprises, the agreement seeks to strengthen the economic fabric of Amazonian communities, where such businesses often serve as the primary source of household income and local employment.
