The US Justice Department confirmed that Singh, a native of India, obtained his citizenship in October 2011—merely months after assaulting a passenger at knifepoint. While he secured his permanent residency in 2000, his naturalization application failed to disclose the criminal acts that occurred just weeks prior to his filing. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the department remains committed to pursuing denaturalization for individuals who use fraud to bypass legal standards.

Singh arrived in the United States in 1992 on a temporary visitor visa and remained in the country without authorization before transitioning to permanent resident status. Following his 2014 conviction for first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping, federal prosecutors moved to vacate his naturalization. US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. noted that the court's judgment serves as a warning against those who attempt to secure citizenship through deceit, emphasizing that such status will not protect offenders from the reach of the law.
