India Records 7.8 Percent GDP Growth in First Quarter of FY27

India’s economy expanded by 7.8 percent in the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, surpassing the Reserve Bank of India’s 7 percent projection. Real GDP reached Rs 81.36 lakh crore during the April-June period, fueling a wave of political validation from government officials and sharp rebukes toward the opposition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the figures as a direct result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, noting that the nation continues to grow despite volatile global conditions. The sentiment was echoed by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Nitin Nabin, who described the current economic trajectory as a sign of the country’s progress toward a 'Viksit Bharat.'

Beyond the official praise, the data sparked a political confrontation. BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, citing past criticisms that labeled the nation's economy as failing. Bhandari argued that the 7.8 percent growth rate proves the country is currently outperforming both China and the United States. While real GDP rose to Rs 81.36 lakh crore from Rs 75.46 lakh crore in the previous year, nominal GDP also saw a 10.3 percent increase, reaching Rs 88.27 lakh crore at current prices.
