Investigators utilized sophisticated technology acquired by the Utah state crime lab in 2023, which allows for the extraction of genetic material from degraded or minimal samples. By cross-referencing DNA found on Smith with that of Laura Aime—another victim whose case was resolved last April—authorities established a definitive link to Bundy. The serial killer, who was executed in Florida in 1989, left a trail of violence across multiple states, including Colorado, Idaho, and Washington.
Beyond the forensic match, officials noted that the circumstances of Smith’s 1974 disappearance mirrored Bundy’s established patterns of motive and opportunity. Smith was last seen at a local pizza parlor in Midvale before her body was recovered nine days later. While this closure offers some resolution for the family, law enforcement agencies maintain that the investigation into Bundy’s broader history continues. Detectives are currently focusing on the 1974 disappearance of 16-year-old Nancy Wilcox, though they emphasize that not every unsolved case from that era can be definitively attributed to him.
