Congress decries ritual purification of Haldwani rally venue

Sprinkling Gangajal and performing a yajna at Haldwani’s Ramlila Maidan following a public address by Mallikarjun Kharge has ignited a fierce political firestorm. Uttarakhand Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana condemned the August 10 ritual as an outrageous act, labeling the symbolic cleansing of the site an affront to marginalized communities.

The controversy traces back to August 8, when the Congress president held a large rally in the Nainital district. Two days later, members of the Shri Ram Sena performed a purification ceremony at the same venue, an act that triggered immediate backlash from the opposition. Dhasmana claimed the ritual was a targeted insult, arguing that such behavior reflects a regressive mindset that violates constitutional protections against untouchability.

The incident reached the floor of Parliament, where Kharge called for the arrest of those involved under the Untouchability (Offences) Act. Support for his position came from prominent figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Asaduddin Owaisi, who characterized the event as a deliberate attempt to demean a Dalit leader. While the BJP has officially distanced itself from the ceremony, with Union Minister JP Nadda condemning the act and promising an investigation, the Shri Ram Sena maintains the ritual was intended to restore religious decorum rather than target the Congress leader’s caste.
