Congress Leaders Back New York Mayor’s Criticism of RSS Event

Mamdani, the first Indian-American mayor in the city’s history, highlighted his personal roots during a press conference, describing a vision of India defined by secularism and pluralism. He expressed deep concern over the RSS movement, which he characterizes as fundamentally exclusionary. While Mamdani remains uncertain if his administration holds the legal authority to block the privately organized gathering, his public stance has resonated with opposition figures in India.

Congress leader Abhishek Dutt amplified the criticism, alleging that the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) face widespread domestic backlash. Dutt claimed that funds collected in Ayodhya under the name of Lord Ram have been misappropriated, accusing the organizations of exploiting public faith. Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood challenged the intent behind Bhagwat’s international outreach, questioning what message the event aims to project to the global community.

Bhagwat arrived in New York on Tuesday for the first leg of a three-nation tour spanning the US, Canada, and the UK. His scheduled address, titled "Universal Oneness Celebrations," is set for August 29 at Madison Square Garden. The event marks a significant milestone in the organization's centenary year, coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan festival.
