BJP Pushes for Senior Role in Potential Punjab Alliance Revival

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal are nearing a formal reconciliation ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with internal signals suggesting a historic power shift. Sources close to the negotiations indicate the BJP is positioning itself as the alliance's senior partner, overturning decades of traditional political hierarchy.

BJP Pushes for Senior Role in Potential Punjab Alliance Revival

Seat-sharing discussions have reached an advanced stage, marked by a strategic withdrawal of the Akali Dal from rural constituency preparations. While the Shiromani Akali Dal recalibrates its footprint, the BJP is aggressively expanding its operational reach. During a recent visit, BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh instructed party cadres to prepare for all 117 assembly constituencies, signaling a desire to control the lion's share of tickets.

This potential partnership represents a reversal of the dynamic that defined the state’s politics for years. Before the 2020 fracture over the now-repealed farm laws, the Akali Dal functioned as the dominant force, typically relegating the BJP to a smaller selection of urban seats. By demanding the lead role, the BJP is testing whether its former ally is willing to accept a diminished status to regain relevance in the Punjab legislature.
