Seat-sharing discussions have reached an advanced stage, marked by a strategic withdrawal of the Akali Dal from rural constituency preparations. While the Shiromani Akali Dal recalibrates its footprint, the BJP is aggressively expanding its operational reach. During a recent visit, BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh instructed party cadres to prepare for all 117 assembly constituencies, signaling a desire to control the lion's share of tickets.
This potential partnership represents a reversal of the dynamic that defined the state’s politics for years. Before the 2020 fracture over the now-repealed farm laws, the Akali Dal functioned as the dominant force, typically relegating the BJP to a smaller selection of urban seats. By demanding the lead role, the BJP is testing whether its former ally is willing to accept a diminished status to regain relevance in the Punjab legislature.
