Grieving Father Demands Accountability After Amravati NICU Fire

“We just want justice; that the guilty be punished,” says Swapnil Borge, whose newborn died when a fire erupted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Amravati’s District Women’s Hospital. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of three infants, has left families devastated and searching for answers about hospital safety protocols.

Swapnil Borge’s child was born at 10 a.m. on Monday and moved to the third-floor NICU shortly after. While Borge’s wife recovered on a different floor, staff instructed the family to leave the building and sleep outside. At approximately 3:00 a.m., an explosion tore through the neonatal unit, sparking a fire that quickly engulfed the area where the glass enclosures housed the newborns.

Preliminary reports indicate the blaze ignited around 3:30 a.m., likely triggered by a malfunctioning ventilator. While medical staff managed to evacuate several other infants as the smoke spread, three lives were lost in the disaster. Borge remains focused on the accountability of those managing the facility, emphasizing that the family’s singular demand is for a transparent investigation into the failures that led to the explosion.
