Electrician Rescued After Hours Trapped Inside 130-Foot High-Rise Sign

Facing 130-foot heights and sweltering conditions, AJ Gow reached for his phone to record a final goodbye to his wife and children. The Illinois electrician, stranded for hours after his lift malfunctioned during a routine maintenance job, feared he would not survive the ordeal while trapped inside the hollow sign structure.

The incident occurred on July 23 in Wilmington, located southwest of Chicago. Gow had ascended the massive commercial sign to perform electrical repairs when his lift failed, leaving him isolated within the structure. As temperatures inside the enclosed space climbed, the situation deteriorated rapidly, prompting Gow to send his co-worker for water and a fan. When the lift remained unresponsive and his physical condition worsened, he instructed the crew to summon emergency services.

Firefighters and rescue technicians faced significant logistical hurdles, requiring specialized gear to navigate the height and the sign’s precarious interior. After hours of effort, emergency responders successfully secured Gow and lowered him safely to the ground. Following the rescue, medical personnel evaluated the electrician on-site. Reflecting on the experience, Gow expressed surprise at the intensity of the event, noting that he had never anticipated being stranded for such a prolonged period.
