The five constituencies affected by the court order include Trichy East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, and Karur. The Trichy East seat became vacant after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chose to retain the Perambur seat following his dual victory in the 2026 assembly elections. While the Election Commission signaled it would wait for the disposal of pending petitions, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government unsuccessfully pushed for an early hearing and the immediate lifting of the stay.
Legal scrutiny of the 2026 election results intensified this week as former Chief Minister MK Stalin filed a petition challenging the victory of TVK candidate VS Babu in the Kolathur constituency. Stalin, who lost the seat by 8,795 votes, has alleged irregularities involving electronic voting machines and VVPATs. He is currently seeking a formal recount and a declaration that the election result for Kolathur is void. Babu, who attributes his win to the popularity of Vijay and his own local ties, maintains that the results reflect a clear mandate for change among the electorate.
