Karti Chidambaram dismisses TVK leadership ambitions

Chidambaram addressed the remarks made by his colleague Manickam Tagore, who had characterized the fervor of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) supporters as a mere fan club mentality. While acknowledging the genuine affection party workers hold for their leadership, the Congress MP suggested that such internal party dreams hold no weight in the broader public discourse. He emphasized that policy and law remain the only metrics that matter in national governance, rather than the unchecked ambitions of individual political outfits.

Beyond electoral politics, Chidambaram sharply criticized the proposal to extend maternity leave as an incentive for families to have a third child. He labeled the initiative a fundamentally flawed approach to population management. Instead of prioritizing sheer numbers, he argued that the state should focus on fostering a healthy, highly educated population. He further challenged the gendered nature of the policy, calling for the inclusion of paternity leave while advocating that such benefits be capped at two children to reflect modern socio-economic needs. On the contentious issue of the Cauvery water-sharing dispute, Chidambaram remained firm, asserting that Tamil Nadu must receive its full, rightful allocation of water every year as mandated by the Cauvery Water Management Board.
