A study published August 19 in Science Advances suggests that specific microbes, including the hardy fungus Aspergillus niger, might endure the harsh conditions of the lunar surface. Researchers simulated environments near the Nobile Rim, Connecting Ridge, and de Gerlache Rim to test how Earth-borne bacteria react to the extreme cold and vacuum of the Moon. The findings challenge the assumption that space’s natural desiccation would immediately sterilize all biological contaminants.
Prabal Saxena of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, who spearheaded the study, views this reality as a double-edged sword. While humans inevitably carry millions of bacteria on their skin and within habitats, the Moon could serve as an unintended laboratory for testing microbial resilience in deep space. However, this contamination poses a significant hurdle for future missions. Andrew Needham, an Artemis contamination control scientist, warned that distinguishing between genuine lunar geology and Earth-based biological traces is essential for the integrity of future exploration, particularly as agencies look toward potential life-detection missions on Mars.
