Switzerland and China Expand Free Trade Agreement

The revised agreement elevates the scope of duty-free trade to 99.8% of Swiss exports, a sharp increase from the previous threshold where only half of Swiss goods entered China without tariffs. While Chinese exports maintain the preferential status established under the original 2014 accord—the first of its kind between Beijing and a continental European economy—this update focuses on broadening the Swiss competitive edge.

Beyond tariff adjustments, the pact introduces updated frameworks for services, digital commerce, and competition policy. Negotiators also integrated new provisions regarding rules of origin and economic cooperation to streamline trade facilitation. This deal cements the current trajectory of Swiss-Chinese economic ties, solidifying China’s position as Switzerland's third-largest trading partner with a total volume now valued at approximately $57.6 billion.
