Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected Bangladesh President in Historic Vote

The balloting took place between 2 pm and 5 pm under the oversight of Chief Election Commissioner ASM Nasir Uddin. Out of 343 members of Parliament who participated, 88 cast their votes for Ahmed, who represented an 11-party alliance including the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party. This shift follows the resignation of Mohammad Shahabuddin, who stepped down due to health complications, triggering a mandatory constitutional process to fill the vacancy.

Alamgir’s path to the office involved a strategic departure from his partisan roots. Following his nomination by the BNP’s National Standing Committee—a decision finalized after consultations with Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman—he formally resigned from his party leadership roles. This transition marks a significant realignment in the nation’s governance, moving away from the era of single-candidate presidential elections toward a more contested legislative process.
