The incident occurred approximately 110 miles northwest of Philadelphia as the helicopter conducted a routine training exercise. According to acting police commissioner Lt. Col. George Bivens, the Cessna veered into the helicopter while maneuvering near the ground. The force of the impact left the small training plane in pieces, scattering debris across the field.
Trapped inside the overturned helicopter, the two state troopers escaped by pushing out a window to crawl to safety. Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the narrow margin between the tragedy and a much larger loss for the state police force. Federal investigators from the FAA and NTSB are currently processing the site to determine the exact flight paths of both aircraft. Authorities have withheld the identity of the deceased pilot pending notification of next of kin.
