Beijing Backs Cairo’s Gaza Mediation to Counter U.S. Influence

Egyptian Intelligence Chief Major General Hassan Rashad met with a Hamas delegation in Cairo on August 16, 2026, to advance ceasefire terms and post-war reconstruction. For Beijing, the dialogue represents more than regional diplomacy; it serves as a calculated effort to promote a multipolar security model and diminish American dominance in the Middle East.

Chinese state media, including Xinhua and CGTN, have amplified coverage of these negotiations, framing Egypt’s role as the primary stabilizer for Gaza. Beijing views the coordination between Rashad and Hamas—particularly regarding the technocratic committee tasked with managing the Strip—as a necessary extension of the China-sponsored reconciliation process between Hamas and Fatah. By aligning with Egypt’s rejection of Palestinian displacement and its focus on opening border crossings, China aims to solidify its own regional standing while securing critical trade routes through the Suez Canal.

Beyond public diplomacy, Chinese military and intelligence circles are actively monitoring the implementation of the Sharm El-Sheikh resolutions. Beijing sees the Egyptian-led roadmap as a safeguard for its economic interests, specifically protecting Red Sea shipping lanes from the instability currently rippling through Lebanon and Iran. By validating the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate’s tactical approach, China is signaling a preference for regional crisis management that operates outside the traditional U.S.-led framework. This strategy seeks to prevent security vacuums in Gaza while ensuring that any post-conflict architecture remains favorable to the Belt and Road Initiative’s logistical requirements.
