Israeli Airstrikes on Syrian Base Ignite Regional Tensions

An Israeli aerial assault on the Abu al-Duhur airbase near Aleppo has drawn sharp condemnation from Turkey and warnings from U.S. diplomats. The Tuesday operation, the first of its kind against government-held infrastructure since March, has deepened anxieties regarding a potential expansion of the conflict across the border.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move by citing a security threat, specifically pointing to the presence of Turkish troops at the facility. While Syrian state media reported that the bombardment resulted in no casualties, the geopolitical fallout remains significant. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry rejected the justification, labeling the breach of Syrian territory a violation of sovereignty.

The U.S. envoy to Turkey characterized the strike as an unnecessary escalation and called for immediate restraint. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad countered by urging global powers to intervene, warning that continued Israeli aggression risks drawing in regional allies and triggering a broader confrontation.
