ICC Defies US Sanctions Targeting Its Leadership

The International Criminal Court denounced Washington’s latest round of sanctions on Tuesday, declaring that targeting judicial officers for performing their duties poses a direct threat to the international legal order. The rebuke followed a US decision to penalize ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye.

The Hague-based tribunal remains undeterred by the measures, which prohibit the officials from entering the United States or utilizing its financial system. Washington maintains that the court has become overly politicized, a stance that has intensified since the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this year regarding the conflict in Gaza.

By attacking the personnel responsible for investigating atrocities, the US is actively eroding the rule of law, the court stated. Although the United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the tribunal, it has increasingly utilized financial and travel restrictions to pressure court staff. The ICC emphasized its commitment to its mandate, asserting that it stands firmly behind its judges and the victims of the crimes it seeks to prosecute.
