Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Hospital Transfer for Imran Khan

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the transfer of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail to a medical facility following prolonged advocacy from his family. The 73-year-old politician, currently facing a battery of legal charges, will receive specialized treatment at Shifa International Hospital until mid-September.

Khan has been held in custody since August 2023, maintaining that the string of cases against him are politically motivated efforts to sideline him since his 2022 ouster. His legal team and relatives recently escalated their appeals, citing a marked decline in his physical condition, specifically pointing to significant vision loss in one eye.

Zulfikar Bukhari, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, confirmed the court’s decision and noted the relief felt by supporters who have long campaigned for better detention conditions. As Khan prepares for the transition to Shifa International, international figures from the cricketing world have also voiced concern regarding his welfare, keeping the focus on his recovery while his various legal proceedings remain ongoing.
